Caring for Your High-Carbon Blade

1. Keep It Dry

High-carbon steel (like the machinist files and rasps I use) will rust if left wet. Always hand-wash and dry immediately. Never put your knife in a dishwasher.

2. Oil Regularly

After use and cleaning, apply a very thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or specialized blade wax. This creates a barrier against oxygen and moisture.

3. Fix Rust Early

If you see red "active" rust, don't panic. Gently scrub it off with a bit of steel wool and oil, then wipe clean and re-oil the surface.

The Patina: Over time, your blade will develop a gray or blueish tint. This is a natural oxidation process called a patina. Unlike red rust, a patina is stable and actually helps protect the steel while telling the story of the work the knife has done.
